The 2018 International Women’s Day (IWD) was hosted by the Justice, Development and Peace Centre (JDPC) Archdiocese of Lagos in consolidation with the United Nations (UN). The conference was part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) organized to educate participants on how women are making positive gains day by day, the strong and growing global movement of advocacy, activism and support for women.

The theme of the IWD 2018 was “PRESS FOR CONFERENCE TOWARDS GENDER PARITY”. The conference which held at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Iwaya centered mainly on the call-to-action to press forward and progress gender parity.

The Guest Speaker for the event; in person of Professor Franca Attoh delivered a paper presentation on the IWD Theme – “PRESS FOR CONFERENCE TOWARDS GENDER PARITY”. She advocated for women-whether Single or married – to empower themselves by becoming educated (going to school), engage in self development – learning a skill to start up personal businesses etc.

The 2nd Discussant, Mrs Ijeoma Igbokwe, an INEC Lagos Officer sensitized the women present at the event to get their voters card to ensure they vote in the upcoming elections.

The 3rd, Discussant, Mrs Titi Akinlawon (SAN) talked briefly on the IWD theme, gave a strong call to motivate and unite women, and the whole community to think, act and be gender inclusive.

The remaining Discussants, in persons of :

  • Mrs Zoya Jibodu, 
  • Chief Mary Bassey,
  • Mrs Lucy Jonah,
  • Lady Ify Mbelede and lastly,
  • Dame Felicia Okoli 

all talked briefly on the huge significance women have when placed in leadership positions, their abilities to deliver more than their male counterparts, sensitizing girls and younger women which most of the Discussants preferred that the IWD conference be organised for and, women to be given chances in male dominated sectors.

There was a huge turn-out of people/audience and many questions from both genders were asked for the Discussants to answer or clarify.
